Day 03 - July 27th - Shanghai to Urumqi |

From the Itinerary: You’ll transfer to the airport for our flight to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Urumqi means “a beautiful pasture” in ancient Mongolian. Some 2,000 years ago it was an important town on the northern route of the Silk Road. On arrival you’ll be met and transferred to our hotel.

Day 3 - Shanghai - Urumqi Breakfast at the hotel. On the bus at 6:40. We left for Urumqi from a different airport. Leon helped check our bags and get our boarding passes. They did an explosive remnants check of our bags. We boarded a bus from the terminal to the plane. We flew China South airlines. The flight lasted 4 and a half hours. Urumqi has a population of 2 million and is desert high planes country. We can see snow capped mountains from town. The new guide Dolkin says they get snow every day in the winter. Urumqi is a melting pot of people. The guide was of Turkish decent, a Uygur. Pronounced "Weegurr". Our hotel the Hoi Tak, Xinjiang is called 5 star but it is closer to a 3. It does have a four lane bowling alley with restaurants and bars. We spent some time in our room and took a walk downtown. The different peoples of this area made the walk interesting. They are famous for their fruits and nuts. We saw several vendors. We ate at the hotel. Cyd, by chance, met one of the hotel managers and he gave us a tour of the activity spots of the hotel. |
