Govan School House Trip June 8th 2013

We drove over to Eastern Washington in hopes of seeing the Northern Lights. A coronal eruption on the sun a couple of days ago was large enough in intensity to give a 60% chance of seeing the lights in the continental US. We left home at noon. We drove past Sun Lakes State Park, Mansfield, Grand Coulee Dam. We had hamburgers in Winbur for dinner. We drove backroads in search of old abandoned homes, barns, silos etc. The old scool house at Govan was the highlight.

Sun Lakes State Park
Dry Falls, created when Lake Missoula flooded several million years ago

Boulders , also called erratics, carried by glaciers from the last ice age

Very large glacier erratic near Mansfield
Grand Coulee Dam
Rolling fields of crops
We spotted this old barn about 1/4 mile off the road
I commented it would be cool if there was an old Model T there too. This old truck was there.

We returned to the school house after dark to try some night photography. We left the shutter open for 30 seconds or longer and "light painted" the building with a high intensity flashlight. We also put a blue, red and orange low intensity glow stick in each window for some of the shots.

Different time durations

Twirling two glow sticks. If you look closely at the RH pitch portion of the roof you will see a long streak.
The streak is a satellite. Namely Iridium #8. The spots in the streak are created by the satellite spining.

No Northern Lights and out of focus.
We spent the night at the rest stop at the top of Vantage hill.
